Winter family activities in Taupo
July 7, 2020

Are you looking for some COOL family activities this winter? Beautiful Taupo has much to offer, so go on…….

Explore a Geothermal Wonderland

Just a 25 minute drive from Taupo, in a hidden valley at Lake Ohakuri, along the Waikato River, you will discover the awe-inspiring landscape of the Orakei Korako Cave & Thermal Park. It is no wonder that the Lonely Planet has described it as “arguably the best thermal area left in New Zealand".

A short ferry ride across the lake, transports you into a picturesque thermal wonderland. This is a world of geysers, hot springs, mud pools and amazing silica terraces decorated with breath-taking colours and clouds of warm steam. The well-crafted, man-made decks enable you to move amongst these natural wonders with ease. Allow 1 to 2 hours for this self-guided walk. With a difficulty rating of “Medium”, most 3 to 80-year-olds will enjoy the experience.

There is a café on site for your convenience.

Visit the Snowy Mountains

With Whakapapa and Tūroa Ski Areas re-opening in July, the ski season has officially started! These world-class ski fields are located only one and a half hours south of Taupo.

Whakapapa Ski field is the largest in the country. It is equipped with the premier beginner facility, Happy Valley, as well as intermediate and advanced trails. This ski field is loved by whānau with young children. The Tūroa Ski field is famous for its natural features. The country’s highest chairlift offers panoramic views of the North Island, and NZ’s longest vertical slope of 722 metres, promises some serious fun in the snow.

Winter sight-seeing is another option for all ages, when visiting the snowy mountains. A ride on NZ’s longest gondola, the Sky Waka, is a must-do. The comfortable ten-seater cabins overlook the Tongariro National Park and the destination is the highest café in the country; Knoll Ridge Chalet. Enjoy a lunch or a coffee while taking in the spectacular views through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows; a truly unforgettable experience.

Soak in our Natural Mineral Hot Pools

There is nothing more irresistible, on a chilly winter’s day, than a relaxing hot soak; and each year, people from all over the world, come to Taupo to enjoy our natural mineral hot springs. Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs is famous for its family-friendly atmosphere; it is indeed a favourite family holiday destination.

Our outdoor pools lie nestled amongst waterfalls, tropical palms and native birdlife. Two large mineral hot pools offer you air loungers, water curtains and massage seats, to enhance your relaxation experience. Two spa pools and a cool pool contain thermally heated fresh water, allowing you to cool off and the children to have a splash. To add to the fun, we have an interactive warm-water playground and three thrilling thermally heated fresh water hydro-slides. The 12 indoor mineral pools offer a more private environment, with varying temperatures for your comfort.

Our very own Savour Café is located on site and is open from 7am to 1pm, serving breakfast and lunch.
