July 23, 2014

The Great Lake Trail officially opened in the beginning of April 2014.

This cycle track starts at Waimaha and ends at Whakaipo Bay, taking you on a 74km journey with spectacular views of Great Lake Taupo and Tongariro National Park.

This track is classified as Grade 3 (Intermediate) which is suitable for a skilled cyclist.

Shorter track options are available to suit your level of fitness and skill (listed below):

  • Waihaha (via Western Bays Road) to Kotukutuku Stream (31km)
  • Whangamata Road to Kawakawa Bay and Kinloch (18km)
  • W2K (Kinloch to Kawhaipo Bay) and Headland Loop (14km to 24km)

water taxi is available to ferry cyclists to four points along the trail.

The development of the Great Lake Trail was developed by Bike Taupo, TDC, DOC and the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project.

We recommend that you visit us at Taupo Hot Springs after your cycle, to take full advantage of benefits of our natural mineral pools.

Little ones will love making a splash in our Interactive Warm Water Playground, and you might like to treat yourself to a spa treatment to relieve any aching muscles.

We also have a wide range of accommodation options and fantastic package deals if you'd like to stay the night.
