Autumn Outdoor Fun for Families in Taupo
March 11, 2019

We can feel autumn is stepping closer when the cool breeze comes in the morning and the days get shorter. In Taupo, we have made the most of this summer sunbathing and water sporting, and when it gets to autumn, there is still tons of fun to be had for you and your family.

Walk along the waterside

Talking a walk along the Taupo’s spectacular natural surroundings is a great way to spend an autumn morning. There are some walkways around Taupo that are suitable for all age and fitness levels.

The Great Lake Walkway is a good choice if you desire a pleasant casual walk with lake views. Though it is a 10km track, you can start and finish at wherever you like, making it a short wander or a long hike.  Alongside the Lake Taupo, this walkway passes several picnic spots as well as coffee shops, giving you a chance to have a decent break during the trip.  Voted as New Zealand's Favourite Urban Ride in 2017, Great Lake Walkway gives the option of biking.

The Huka Trails offer several walkways along the Waikato river. It is recommended for families the “Rotary Ride track” which is between Spa Thermal Park and Huka Fall and supplies a mostly shaded country road walk with stunning river view. Though named “ride track”, it is a perfect trail for walking.  Venturing through the trail, the plants and birds by the road ride will keep your eyes busy. The murmurings of running river water and breeze create a relaxing atmosphere.

Cruise on the Water

No matter what the weather is like, a cruise on the water won’t disappoint you and will always bring to you and your family loads to see and memorise.

Plan a cruise with Ernest Kemp is a good idea. Hop on the replica steamboat and take a relaxing boat trip to the famous Māori Rock Carvings and beautiful bays lined with native trees. During the 2-hour journey on the boat, you get to enjoy the lake view from a different point, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, say hello to the flying ducks and gulls passing by. You can even choose to go off-boat to have a swim in the crystal-clear water!

Cruising on the Waikato river is another idea that will brighten up your break. Birdlife, native bush, natural hot steams and New Zealand’s largest rapids are presented to give you more insight about the mother river of the Waikato region.  Huka Falls River Cruise not only offers a scenic-viewing trip on the crystal green water but also bring you close to New Zealand's most visited natural attraction, the Huka Falls. You will be able to watch the incredible milky blue water falling and foaming from its front.

Soak in Natural Mineral Springs

Nothing better than a soak on a cool autumn day! As one of New Zealand’s most active thermal regions, Taupo offers a range of “hot spots” with geothermal mineral water for you to soak the coldness and stress away before or after a day of exploring Taupo.

Taupo DeBretts’ Waterpark is for the whole family. Locating at the bottom of Onekeneke Valley, the pool complex is surrounded by waterfalls and pure nature, lush landscaping, providing an absolute paradise for relaxing. Treat yourself better by having a Spa treatment at Living Waters Spa.  Soak in the mineral-rich healing water, the interactive warm water playground is an ultimate place for young children. The thrilling dragon hydro slide and two amazing heated curved racing slides make the visit even better for older children.

There is a lot to offer here in Taupo. We love to see you enjoy a great time and hear you have created some new valuable memories.
