Skiing on a Live Volcano

The only skiing in the North Island of New Zealand happens in the Lake Taupo region. Skiing here is a complete thrill as you carve up snow on an actual live volcano. This is also the home to the largest vertical drop ski zone in all of Australasia.

Skiing in the Taupo regionThe popular ski field of Whakapapa is a short 1 hour 20 minute drive from the city of Taupo and only 40 min. from Turangi. Whakapapa and Turoa, have a combined area of 1050 hectares, the largest skiable area in New Zealand. There is an excellent variety of terrain to suit all levels of skiers and snowboarders, and dedicated areas for tobogganing and tubing. Equipment rentals can be found in Taupo and many location on the mountain, Turangi and Oakune. You can find transportation daily from Taupo to the mountains via Tongariro Expeditions, just ask your accommodation provider. 

Since the weather on the mountain can be unpredictable, basing yourself in Lake Taupo is a great choice as there are so many great winter activities to do off the mountain such as shopping, museums, cafes, spas and delicious restaurants.
